The term ELVO refers to “Emergent Large Vessel Occlusion,” a type of acute ischemic stroke with high rates of mortality or disability. Stroke is the leading cause of adult disability in North America and is the fifth most common cause of death, and ELVO accounts for the greatest proportion of patients with long-term disability. This panel will discuss strategies for improving survival and minimizing disability in this type of stroke.

John H. Potvin, NRP, is the Director of Emergency Medical Services for the East Providence Fire Department and Director of the Roger Williams University Emergency Medical Services Degree Program. In addition to serving on the Rhode Island Stroke Taskforce John is Vice-Chairman of the Rhode Island Ambulance Service Advisory Board.

Ali Saad, MD, is a staff neurologist with specialization in stroke at Rhode Island Hospital and the Miriam Hospital. He is also an Assistant Professor of Neurology at Alpert Medical School with significant interest in the education of neurology residents and advance practice providers.

Ryan A. McTaggart, MD, is an interventional neuroradiologist at Rhode Island Hospital and an Assistant Professor in the Departments of Diagnostic Imaging, Neurology, and Neurosurgery at Alpert Medical School. He is an expert in the treatment of neurovascular disease and is currently focused on innovating systems of care so that all stroke patients have timely access to the highest-level stroke care.
